Flood-Protection Works in Greater Limassol

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Project concerns the construction of rainwater drainage system of a total length of 21km, in order to direct rainwater to be drained into an existing drainage system or into rivers. The Project extends to all five (5) Municipalities within the SBLA’s boundaries. The Project is being implemented in sections with pre-set completion period with the aim to minimise traffic congestion.  

OBJECTIVES

The Project is part of the planning of SBLA for overall flood protection in specific areas of the Greater Limassol that have suffered from flooding in the past and is expected to contribute substantially to reducing the flooding problem in Limassol.

DELIVERABLES

With the completion of the project’s works, an area of approximately 1,700 hectares is expected to be protected from flooding, with the number of beneficiary population estimated at 75,000 people.

TENDERS

The Flood-Protection Works in Greater Limassol are being implemented with two Contracts, one for the provision of Consultant Engineering services (Tender 14/2017) and one for the construction works (Tender 4/2020 – Contract F5). The total value of the two Contracts is €20,018,525 plus VAT.

Tender 14/2017 “for the provision of Consultant Engineering services for additional studies, the preparation of tender documents, the evaluation of tenders and supervision of the construction works” was awarded to Ζ & Α.P. Antonaropoulos and Partners on 12/9/2018.

Tender 4/2020 “Construction of Anti-flooding Works in Greater Limassol – Contract F5” was awarded to Iacovou-Zemco (SL) Joint Venture and signed on 10/2/2021. Construction works began on 4/3/2021 and is expected to be completed within 30 months.
 

THALIA 2021 – 2027

The project is co-funded by the EU within the framework of the Cohesion Policy Programme “THALIA 2021-2027”.

Specifically, the project is incorporated into:

Priority 5: Climate Change and Circular Economy.

Objective 2.4:  Promoting climate change adaptation and disaster risk prevention and resilience, considering ecosystem-based approaches.

Policy Objective: A greener, low-carbon transitioning towards a net zero carbon economy and resilient Europe by promoting clean and fair energy transition, green and blue investment, the circular economy, climate change mitigation and adaptation and risk prevention and management, and sustainable urban mobility.
