Who and when must be connected to the sewerage system
Following the construction of the sewerage system in public streets and their delivery to the Board, announcements similar to the one that follows will be made in the press for the connection to the public sewerage system:
Every owner or occupant of a service location that is used for residential, occupational trading, business, employment for recreation or other purposes and is located in streets or areas that are referred to in the tables published in the official Gazette and in other newspapers as announcements, is obliged to construct by the deadline referred to in the announcement, at his own expense and according to the permit that is issued from the Sewerage Board of Limassol – Amathus, a private sewer that can be connected to the public sewer. Connection to the system is allowed only after the relevant written authorisation from the Board and Green Card is obtained.
After the issue by the Board of the written authorisation according to the Regulations of the SBLA (Part I V Regulation 7(5), the owner in question or occupant is obliged to dispose all the sewage, waters, industrial liquid waste, or other waste of this service location through the public sewer and to fill with appropriate materials any septic sinks, absorbent sinks or similar private installations of sewage disposal in a way that the Board is satisfied.

PART IV – PERMITS
Every application must be submitted to the Board in duplicate for the issue of the permit for the construction or reconstruction or execution of alterations, additions or repairs of the building's sewer, private sewer or private system of sewage disposal or for the installation of sanitary installations and hygiene supplies. This application must be signed by the owner or occupant of the service location or by an authorised representative and be submitted in the format that the Board may specify at each time.
The application should be accompanied by the following documents:
- The registration certificate of the service location, if the applicant is the owner of the service location. However, if the occupant is not the owner, the contract in which it is shown appears that he is the occupant of the service location should also be submitted.
- The plan - in duplicate - which has been drawn up and reproduced in a clear way using appropriate and authentic materials, at a scale of at least 1/100 and which will show:
- The position, depth, inclination, shape, layout, size, type, method, and materials of construction of the sanitary installations and hygiene supplies of the sewer, private sewer, manhole or inspection points or the private system of sewage disposal and the number of the attachments that may be connected to the sewer of the building.
- Any other information that the Board may require.
- A topographic plan -in duplicate- in the largest available scale (of the government) in which the following should appear according to the situation:
- the boundaries of the constructing plot and the service location which is located or is planned to be build in it.
- the position of the construction sewer, the visit or inspection sinks and the private sewer of the construction.
- if it is about a private system of sewage disposal, then the position of such a system.
- the area of the plot and the area which is covered by constructions which exist or are planned to be build in cubic metres.
- The construction permit that has been issued by the relevant authority according to the construction which exists or that is planned to be built on the plot.
- A note specifying the number and the area in a horizontal shape of semi-floors floors and basements of the construction. Also the hypsometric differences according to the height of the street pavements or the curve of the street in relation to the other heights as they have been approved by the Board.
- A declaration as to whether the private construction sewer will be used to transfer in a public sewer domestic sewage or industrial liquid waste. In the case that it transfers industrial liquid waste the applicant must give to the Board additional details according to the volume, fluctuation of the discharged volume, the characteristic and the sources of the liquid waste.
The holder of the permit should give or see that a written notice of at least ten working days will be delivered to the Board's office in relation to the date and time during which he plans to start any construction work.
Items that should not be flushed down the drain or toilet
- Cooking oil or other edible oils and grease
- Food leftovers (ground* or not), cooking oil or other edible oils, solid pastry leftovers (chocolate, creams, syrups, etc.)
- Condoms, sanitary towels, baby diapers, ear cotton pads, dental floss, cotton, wetties, cleansing wipes,
- Any solids like glasses, plastics, metals, wood, sand, soil, gravel, clothing, fabrics, rags and cigarette butts
- Detergents, cleaning products, bleaches and chemicals which are not biodegradable or environmentally friendly or chemicals which are chlorine or ammonia based or contain phosphates.
- Condensate from air conditioning units
- Bandages, syringes, blood, drugs, toxic, radioactive, contaminating or dangerous substances from medical, laboratory and other processes
- Toxic and dangerous substances, heavy metals (like antibiotics, medicine, mercury etc.)
- Mineral oils, lubricants, wax and any greasy substances
- Colouring substances (paints, dyes), solvents
- Pesticides and toxic waste
- Gasoline, petrol or other flammable substances, explosive mixtures
- Corrosive industrial chemical waste
- Ground-water or rainwater
- Items in liquid or gas form at temperatures higher than 65οC
- Sludge or sewage from biological treatment units
- Septic sewage (i.e. from waterproof tanks-septic tanks)
* The use of a waste disposal unit in the kitchen is prohibited.

Grease traps (for organic greases & oils)
Grease traps are obligatory for the kitchens of restaurants, confectioneries, bakeries, etc.
- They should be constructed in an accessible area for cleaning and inspection.
- The grease trap should be watertight and be protected from erosion.
- Grease traps should be constructed and maintained from the householder or the holder with his own expenses.
- No waste water from toilets and bathrooms, rainwater, inorganic oil (engine oil) or any other liquid other than waste water from the kitchen basin should pass thru the grease trap.
- Grease trap should have ventilation.
- The pipes entering and leaving the grease trap should have minimum slope 2%.
- Grease traps should be of type and capacity that has been approved by the Council and they must always be maintained in continuous and satisfactory operation.
- Cleaning (emptying) and filling with clean water should take place every 14 days or maximum one month, according with the use, in order that there is always space for detention of grease and solids.
- The dimensions and generally their use should be according with the codes CYS-EN 1825-2:2002 and CYS-EN 1825-1:2004.

Construction details for pumping Stations
- In case of placement of one pump (residences, houses with two apartments) then the volume of the pumping station under the incoming pipe should at least be equal with the daily flow.
- It should be designed and constructed in such a way in order that it can support loads (placement of iron), not allowing underground water to enter and be water tight. Inspection by the Board prior to issue of Green card.
- The longest period of sewage standing still in the pumping station is not to exceed half hour.
- Non return Valve (one way valve) must be placed in pumping station where it can be checked.
- Lifting mechanism must be installed.
- The pump should have free passage of solids no smaller than 30mm.
- Pumping Station should have ventilation.
- An alarm system with bell or lamp in case of damage of pumps or high level of sewages in pumping station should be placed.

Along with the application that is submitted to the responsible municipality or other authority for obtaining building permit or authorization for opening up or construction of road in the region of the Board, an application for authorization of construction of sewerage system must also be submitted to SBLA. The application must be submitted along with the following documents: Topographical drawing with the plot division. Drawing in scale 1:1000 with the proposed network of sewerage (in paper and in electronic form). Proposed road profiles. Building permit already obtained (copy). Title deed of property Storm drain sewers if it is required.
The owner must appoint supervising Engineer for supervision of work.
These Regulations are applied in the entire region of the Board, independent if there are or not sewers in the area.
