OPERATIONAL PROGRAMME (OP) Sustainable Development and Competitiveness 2007-2013
FUND: Cohesion Fund
PRIORITY AXIS (PA): Basic Environment Infrastructure
PROJECT: Construction of a sewerage system in rural and urban areas of Greater Limassol – Contracts Ε7 and Ε9
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: The Project includes the construction of sewerage systems of a total length of approximately 108 km for both urban and rural areas. Regarding rural areas, the Project includes the construction of a sewerage system 6.5 km in length for the villages of Pano Polemidia, Mouttayiaka and Ayios Tychonas. For the urban areas, the Project includes the construction of a sewerage system 101.5 km in length. It also includes the construction of a pumping station to carry sewage from the north-west areas of the project to the Sewage Treatment Plant at Moni. The pumping station will operate in the future as a backup unit to deal with emergencies concerning problems with the operation of the western treatment plant.
DELIVERABLES / EXPECTED RESULTS: The construction phase of the Project has been designed with a timeframe of 2050, by which time the population being served by the Project is estimated at 26,000 and the volume of treatable sewage at 1,300,000 m³/year (average inflow) while for 2015 the population equivalent is estimated at around 10,600 and the volume of treatable sewage at 500,000 m³/year (average inflow). Once completed, the Project will contribute to compliance with Directive 91/271/EEC on urban wastewater treatment, the main aim of which is the protection of public health and the aquatic environment.
